Target RedCard vs. Cashback Apps: Which Saves More?

A side-by-side breakdown of the 5% Target RedCard discount versus stacked cashback apps — including which combination saves the most on real orders.

The Target RedCard offers a flat 5% discount at checkout. Cashback apps offer variable rebates paid out later. Which actually saves more — and do you have to choose?

The RedCard case

5%, instant, on almost every purchase. There's no waiting, no receipt scanning, no rotating rates. Free shipping on Target.com and an extended 30-day return window sweeten the deal.

The cashback app case

A well-timed Rakuten promo can hit 10%. Ibotta rebates on groceries frequently exceed the RedCard's 5% on individual items. But rates fluctuate and require effort.

The correct answer: stack both

There is no rule that says you have to choose. The RedCard's 5% discount is applied to your total; cashback portals reward the pre-discount subtotal on Target.com. Ibotta pays on the products, not the payment method. Stack all three.

On a $200 grocery haul with a 3% Rakuten day and $12 in Ibotta rebates, the stack returns $32 — a 16% effective discount.

When to skip the RedCard

If you already carry a 2%+ cashback credit card and rarely shop Target, opening a new card for a 3% marginal gain may not justify the credit inquiry. Otherwise, the RedCard is the easiest 5% you'll ever earn.
